+0100<p>Really, I know the many relationships of art and science are just too big to talk about, let alone trying to imagine their potential for hybridization. Instead, let&#8217;s take another hybrid, the mermaid. We all know that the mermaid is a creature half-human half-fish, half-terrestrial half-aquatic, in word form a simple adjective combination of <em>mer</em>, the sea, plus <em> maid</em>, the woman, or shown in pictures, the top half a sexy woman, the bottom half a fish&#8217;s tail. But the mermaid actually is not a hybrid; the mermaid is not half-human and half-fish. Mythically, folklorically, the mermaid is a shape-shifter - not a creature with a fixed hybrid form as represented in language or illustrated in pictures. The mermaid in narration or in action is a creature having the ability to actually shift between two distinct forms. On dry land she walks in a human likeness, and in the sea she she swims like a fish. To understand that sometimes she appears human and sometimes she appears fish is already to realise that the mermaid is another kind of being altogether, a being with the capacity or talent of appearing to humans as either human or fish. The static half-and-half form of the mermaid as she is represented (either in words or images), is a mis-representation; as a mythological being, in herself, the mermaid does not have a split down the middle. On the contrary, we simply want to extend the boundaries of Earth.&#8221; At the end of the film, the ocean planet Solaris is beginning to form islands for the astronauts.
